What Can You Do in APhA-ASP?

It's great to join APhA-ASP as a student pharmacist for all the networking opportunities and other benefits, but what if you want to lead? Look no further!

Chapter Leadership Opportunities
-Chapter President: Voted on by all chapter members every year. Must be a P1. You would serve as President-Elect for one year and President for one year. Serves as the head of the chapter Executive Committee. Serves as final decision maker for the chapter.
-Chapter Vice President: Helps the Chapter President out and is a member of the executive committee. Is voted on every year by the chapter members.
-Secretary: Takes care of recording what goes on and organizing meetings. This person lets the chapter membership know when the meetings occur and creates minutes of each meetings. This person is also responsible for creating a monthly newsletter of chapter activities.
-Treasurer: Deals with all the chapter's finances AKA holds the chapter's pursestrings. A valuable member of the chapter executive committee. Is voted on every year by the chapter members. 
-Committee Chair: Interested in a specific chapter committee? This is the place for you. You are able to plan health fairs and other activities with the help and direction of the chapter executive committee. These positions are appointed by the chapter executive committee every year. -Chapter Delegate: Voted on by all chapter members every year. This person is the chapter's voice in policy matters at MRM and at the National Meeting. Each chapter is allotted one delegate, regardless of size.

Regional Officers
Note: There are 7 other pharmacy schools in our region: They are: University of Nebraska Medical Center, Drake University, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming, South Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, and the University of Minnesota.

-Region 5 Delegate: Elected by the chapter delegates at MRM. The Delegate is responsible for many different activities. The Member-at-Large is a delegate to the APhA House of Delegates, helps the MRM coordinator plan the Midyear Regional Meeting, convenes a caucus at the National Meeting, just to name a few of the many responsibilities. This year's Region 5 Delegate is Paul Morales from Creighton University.
-Region 5 Member-at-Large: Elected by the chapter delegates at MRM. This person's primary responsibilities are making sure that the region's patient care projects and membership activities are at their best. In addition, the Regional Member-at-Large helps the Regional Delegate convene a caucus at the National Meeting. This year's Regional Member-at-Large is Daphne Pearson from Drake University.
-MRM Coordinator: This person is the head planner for the Midyear Regional Meeting. This person is elected at the Midyear Regional Meeting previous to the one they are coordinated by the chapter delegates. Most often, this person is also a member of the host city's chapter. This year's MRM Coordinator is Kristy Sigvartsen from Creighton University.

National Standing Committees
A note on national standing committees: All of these are positions appointed by the National Executive Committee. There are five positions on each committee, one of which is filled by a member of the National Executive Committee.

-Policy Standing Committee: The purpose of the Education Standing Committee is to bring to the attention of the Association recommendations on policies which address the immediate and long range interests and concerns of the Academy. The Policy Standing Committee also encourages local chapters to educate their members about Academy resolutions through programs, discussions or community projects.
-Education Standing Committee: The purpose of the Education Standing Committee is to evaluate the educational needs of the Association and make recommendations to the Education Department staff as to how to meet those needs. The Education Standing Committee also promotes APhA-ASP Professionalism Initiatives and Patient Care Programs to APhA-ASP Chapters.
-Awards Standing Committee: The purpose of the Awards Standing Committee is to honor those outstanding student pharmacists and APhA‑ASP chapters whose recognition by the Academy and the Association will enhance the profession.
-Communications Standing Committee: The purpose of the Communications Standing Committee is to optimize the content, navigation, and awareness of the APhA-ASP Web site. To collaborate with the APhA Public Relations Department and to advise APhA-ASP Chapters on how to better utilize media to promote the role of the pharmacist.

National Executive Committee
A note on national executive committee positions: All of these positions are voted on by the APhA-ASP House of Delegates every year at the National Meeting. Please visit the APhA-ASP national website to learn more about all the responsibilities of these positions if you are interested. 

-National Member-at-Large (2 positions): The National Members-at-Large main duties are in the areas of student outreach and presiding over the business sessions at the Midyear Regional Meetings. There are many other responsibilities that a National Member-at-Large takes on. This year's National Members-at-Large are Josh Ogle from the University of Tennessee and Bonnie Hui from the University of Southern California. 
-National President-Elect: The main job of the National President-Elect is to learn the intricacies of the position of National President and take over as President if the current National President cannot do so. The National President-Elect serves one year in this position before becoming the National President. There are many other responsibilities of the office of National President-Elect. This year's National President-Elect is Steven Zona from the University of Pittsburgh.
-National President: The main job of the National President is to represent the membership of APhA-ASP in many different ways. Each National President has a theme. This year's theme is: Many Paths, One Purpose: Inspiring Student Pharmacists to Unite the Profession. In addition, the National President serves as a member of the APhA Board of Trustees. The National President has many other duties. This year's National President is Adriane Irwin from the University of New Mexico. 
-APhA-ASP Speaker of the House: The main job of the APhA-ASP Speaker of the House is to lead the two House of Delegates sessions at the National Meeting. It is expected that the person who fills this position has an intimate knowledge of the policy procedure and rules of the House of Delegates sessions. There are many other responsibilities that the Speaker takes on. This year's Speaker of the House is Alison Knutson from the University of Minnesota.
